The efficiency of the 2229 filter ensures that toxins are decomposed quicker than other traditional filters.  Nitrates/Ammonium are removed approximately 70% quicker than other types of filters.

The Eheim 2229 also has a CO2/oxygen exchange through a breathing tube and a pulsing movement as it is discharged from the filter. This pulsing increases the oxygen levels in the water and increases circulation in the aquarium.
